Waterproof Outdoor LED Backlit Channel Letters with Halo Effect

Mirror Walls, Power Surges, and Pigeons

Mounting a sign on brick is easy, but mounting a backlit letter on polished granite, marble, or glass is a nightmare for the inexperienced. The problem is reflection. The shiny wall acts like a mirror, showing the ugly "dots" of the LED chips hidden behind the sign. Standard diffusion isn't enough here. For these high-gloss surfaces, we apply a secondary "holographic diffuser film" to the back of the acrylic. This scatters the light in every direction before it hits the wall, ensuring that your backlit letter produces a soft, buttery cloud of light rather than a reflection of the circuit board.

Another invisible killer is "In-Rush Current." When you flip the switch to turn on a massive backlit letter installation, the power supplies pull a huge spike of electricity for about 10 milliseconds—sometimes 50 times their normal operating current. This often trips the circuit breaker instantly. We solve this by using premium drivers with built-in "Soft Start" circuitry. They ramp up the voltage gently over a second. It saves you from having to run down to the basement to flip the breaker every time you turn your backlit letter signage on.

If your business is in a city center, you have to think about wildlife. A thick backlit letter creates a 2-inch wide ledge on top, which is prime real estate for pigeons. Bird droppings are highly acidic and will eat right through the powder coating of a backlit letter in less than a year. To prevent this, we can install invisible, 45-degree clear acrylic "bird slopes" or "spikes" on the top return of every character. The birds literally slide off, keeping your sign clean and protecting the finish of the backlit letter without ruining the aesthetics.

Finally, take a close look at the edge of the acrylic backer. Most factories just laser cut it and leave the edge looking frosted or slightly scorched. It looks cheap when viewed from the sidewalk. We run the acrylic back of every backlit letter through a diamond polishing machine. This shaves off a microscopic layer of plastic, leaving the edge crystal clear and glass-like. It prevents dust from sticking to rough edges and gives the backlit letter a jewelry-grade finish that looks expensive even when the lights are off.
